STOP Sports Injuries Analyzes Exercising in the Cold, Condensed Youth Seasons

DOWNERS GROVE, ILLINOIS (January 22, 2021) – STOP (Sports Trauma and Overuse Prevention) Sports Injuries provided some medical analysis on the effects of exercising in cold weather and condensed youth and school sports seasons as a result of COVID-19.

The white paper “Exercising in the Cold” looks at the encouragement by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) to exercise outside to reduce the possible spread of COVID-19 and the challenges the presents during the winter in northern climates. This white paper examines the areas of exercise clothing, sunscreen, hydration and hypothermia/frostbite.

The white paper “Condensed Sports Seasons” examines the impact of sports seasons at the youth and school levels being played at abnormal times (i.e., football in the spring), competing in much tighter time frames and more overlap of sports seasons. This white paper looks at the pandemic and potential long-term health implications, the importance of conditioning, the challenges of overlapping seasons, maintaining the importance and value of shorter seasons and the effects of injuries during shorter seasons.
