INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA (August 26, 2019) – Ice hockey participation increased slightly in 2018-19 at high schools in 18 states and the District of Columbia which play under National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rules, according to its annual High School Athletics Participation Survey.
The overall NFHS ice hockey participation went up from 44,669 in 2017-18 to 44,933 last year. The boys increased from 35,060 to 35,283 and the girls increased from 9,609 to an all-time high of 9,650. The girls increased for the sixth consecutive year. The record for overall participation was 45,934 in 2010-11 and for boys participation it was 37,255 in 2008-09.
The 18 states with boys and girls programs playing under NFHS rules are Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin. Washington, D.C., also has boys and girls ice hockey programs.
The top five states for boys participation are Massachusetts (7,425), Minnesota (5,740), New Jersey (3,631), Michigan (3,282) and New York (3,010). The top five states for girls participation are Minnesota (3,726), Massachusetts (2,306), Wisconsin (672), New York (564) and Maine (410).
