Lip Guards Permissible for Use By NFHS
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA (September 17, 2020) — Shock Doctor has released three new football lip guard designs that feature “Black Lives Matter” and 100% of profits from sales will be donated to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). The UNCF has an illustrious history of supporting students with scholarships to historically Black colleges and universities.
These products would be permitted for use under 2020 National Federation of State High School Football Rules, according to Bob Colgate, NFHS Director of Sports and Sports Medicine and liaison to the Football Rules Committee. Colgate said individual state associations could be more restrictive and not allow tooth and mouth protectors with any design, logos or words printed on them in football.
The “Black Lives Matter” lip guards have been worn by NFL players, including the Los Angeles Chargers’ Austin Ekeler, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Boston Scott and the Baltimore Ravens’ James Proche. They, and other players, will continue to wear them during the 2020 season.
“Shock Doctor and United Sports Brands stand in solidarity with the Black community to create positive awareness and give football players a voice for what matters,” said Michael Magerman, President and CEO of United Sports Brands, the parent company of Shock Doctor. “There’s much to be done, but we consider this donation a start.”
The three football lip guards are available on ShockDoctor.com. All profits from their sale will be donated to the UNCF, whose mission is creating equality in education.
“Most of the athletes Shock Doctor protects are children and young adults. We believe in working to improve access to higher education for them,” said Magerman.
